A digital menu explains what is available. A reservation requests or confirms a table. Online ordering creates an order. Guests may access all three on one restaurant website, but the underlying responsibilities and statuses are different.

Keep menu information in one maintained source

Use a consistent source for dishes, prices and approved ingredient information. Separately maintained PDFs, web pages and ordering tools can disagree. Assign someone to maintain the information and define how daily changes are published.

On a phone, guests should be able to read categories and dishes without zooming. A downloadable PDF can be useful alongside an accessible web menu. Test how the menu handles an unavailable item or a changed daily special.

Explain whether a reservation is requested or confirmed

A contact form does not automatically reserve a table. Choose whether the process sends a request for review or books actual availability, and make the confirmation match that decision. Party size, date, time and contact details support the task; unrelated mandatory fields add friction.

Test a fully booked service, an unexpected closure and an inquiry outside opening hours. The guest needs a clear explanation, while the team needs a named owner for unresolved requests.

Follow an order through to the team

Products, options and acceptance status need to work together. A successful form submission is not sufficient evidence that the kitchen has accepted an order. Define where staff see incoming orders and when acceptance becomes visible to the guest.

Run a practical rehearsal: place an order on a small phone, confirm that it reaches the intended workstation, handle an unavailable item and verify the status shown to the guest. Include a slow connection and a repeated button tap.

Automate information that is known

Acknowledgements and internal notifications can reduce manual work. An AI assistant can explain approved menu or service information. Table availability and accepted orders should come from the system that actually manages them.

The Tess Vegan Cafe reference documents a website with integrated ordering. For another restaurant, the starting point is its own guest journey: identify the handoff currently causing the most questions or manual copying, then improve that step first.
